Have you ever been through a season where it’s really difficult to find the good? 

I know I have. 

The truth is, there is a lot in the world that breaks my heart. There is dysfunction in my family that I can’t fix  and there are situations I’ve had to let go of simply because I can't carry the weight.

I've learned though that no matter what is happening around me, I have the power to create the state I long to live in! I am in control of me and only me, and that is all I need to feel good in my own life. 

I’m done living in a state of heaviness and helplessness. What good am I to the world if I can’t see the hope, the love, and the good I already have?! The change we want to see in our lives, in our families, and in the world must first happen inside of us. 

Living fully alive isn’t about denying the bad, it’s about seeing the whole picture; the good and the bad, the duality of life, and choosing to give your energy to what gives life, not takes life away.

Here are my 3 favorite ways to stay in my joy when life is tough (PLUS a free wallpaper download!):

1. TAKE OWNERSHIP OF ALL OF IT

Your life is up to you. Many people live as a victim (I used to). When you live like life is happening to you, life feels scary and out of control. You become powerless to the actions of others, to the government, and to circumstance. When you consciously take responsibility of every aspect in your life, both good and bad, all of your choices, and stop blaming, life becomes much lighter. You and you alone are responsible for you. This mentality changed everything for me.

2. STAY IN YOUR POWER

What are you giving your energy to? I fall into patterns of scrolling Facebook, reading headlines, and getting flustered before I realize I’ve gotten sucked into the funnel of negativity. Start being aware of where your energy is going; stay present! What conversations are you engaging in? What are you reading? What are you dwelling on? 

If you find yourself constantly telling the same story over and over, complaining, venting, and ruminating on what someone said to you, it’s time to take back your power and be present. 

3. MEDITATE ON THE GOOD 

I try to infuse my days with as much gratitude and good thoughts as possible. Our reality is shaped by our beliefs, so why not choose to believe life is happening for us!? To do this,  I repeat affirmations, I focus my mind on truth, and I leave myself reminders everywhere.

Are you sick of chasing "perfect?"

When I first started my self-love journey, I modeled my life after the self-love big-wigs. I found mentors and coaches and gurus I thought were “living the dream life” and started adopting their practices. I took my coach’s advice, I read all the books, but always found myself falling away from the “perfect" way to live. 

I was so frustrated. I longed to live a holistic life where I loved myself, but the more I tried, the more I realized I was striving to achieve someone else’s idea of perfect instead of finding my own.

How do you define “perfect?” Notice how I didn’t ask how your coach, your mother, your mentor, or your best friend define it! 

THE TRUTH IS... You don’t need advice. You don’t need their idea of perfect. 

You need space to discover your own. Space to be you. Space to be heard. Space to discover your truth and what you already know. You need space to figure things out and discover what works for you. That’s what life coaching is all about.  Sure, I can give you advice, tools, and tell you what I’ve learned, but you don’t get to live my journey, you get to live your own. 

If you’ve been trying to contort yourself into any other image of perfect besides your own, today I give you permission to let go.

Let go of striving and step into s p a c e. Let go of opinions and start to live your truth. (Someone will always have a difference of opinion, so why not just be you!?)

Four years ago I had just gone through the biggest friendship breakup. (The kind where passive letters are exchanged, people are deleted from social media, and theres an ache in the pit of your stomach. It wasn't pretty). The end of the friendship along with the major issues I had trusting women, boundary issues I had with my family, and fear of being truly known all pointed me to finally get my butt in therapy. 

In my first session, I was surprised my therapist asked, "who are your safe people?"

My safe people? 

As a vivacious extrovert, I had plenty of friends, but none that really knew me; none I felt completely myself around. In the midst of my social bubble, I felt completely alone. It hit me like a ton of bricks. I didn't know what healthy friendship looked like. I thought having petty drama in my life was normal!  I thought hiding who I was in my relationships out of fear was something everybody did. My "aha" moment started a long journey to developing boundaries, learning my safe people, and understanding where I truly began. 

Since, I have learned to align my life from the inside out. I’ve become my own friend first; finally living according to my values and have put myself first. I've shifted my friendships from a mile wide and an inch deep, and now go a mile deep and an inch wide. 

I’ve learned that my energy and love are resources I need to honor! My closest friendships are sacred, meaningful, and most of all, safe. I can be myself and trust I'll be loved. I never worry about gossip or drama.

Write a New Story: A Free Mindset Worksheet!

No matter where you've been, you can write a new story!

Ever left a situation and found yourself over-thinking and insecure?

“How did I show up? Did I ask enough questions? Was I too quiet? Did I come across as cold, annoying, or too much!?”

The chatter in our head and the stories we play over and over can either give life, or take us out of living it fully. We over-think and feel insecure because we are held back by old stories and fear-based thinking. It’s time to shape new stories from love so we can show up fully without fear or worry! 

**Bonus: when we show up confidently with love-based stories, we are able to love others better, therefore creating the relationships we long for!

A simple way to change these thoughts is to simply notice them and then correct them. Capture your thoughts and write new ones! Start observing your thoughts, writing them down, and shape a new story (even if you don’t believe the new story yet!) Becoming conscious and aware is the first step in breaking those old agreements.
